Behind the DS-707

De Sede’s iconic modular seating collection

Canadian-born, London-based designer Philippe Malouin describes his creative process, which champions discovery and experimentation along the way—often resulting in deceptively simple objects: “I think we need to make some kind of discovery. I design at the end of the creative process rather than at the beginning. The process sometimes dictates shape, and then refinement happens after.” “My usual approach to designing something is to think of a characteristic that will render the item different than the others. But then it is about making sure that the product is as simple as possible (simple in production, assembly and aesthetics).”

Designed by Philipe Malouin

Canadian-born Philippe Malouin began his studio in 2009 after several years working for English designer Tom Dixon. His diverse portfolio includes tables, rugs, chairs, lights, art objects and installations. Recently, Philippe won the W Hotels ‘Designer of the Future’ Award and the Wallpaper* ‘Best Use of Material’ Award.

Designer Philippe Malouin on Designing the DS-707

DS - 707

The ‘DS-707’ system includes an armchair and a modular sofa that can be infinitely extended to create custom configurations. Like much of Malouin’s work, the design appears simple yet mysterious. The flowing, soft transitions combine the postmodern era of Swiss furniture design with the clear open structures of brutalism that inspired designer Philippe Malouin. Available as a comfortable armchair or as a modular sofa that can be combined in infinite ways, the DS-707 is the visual perfection of form that gives every room a unique highlight.
